One of the age-old traditions of Finnish food production, slash-and-burn cultivation, is still maintained in Koli as one of the National Park’s central tasks. Slash-and-burn fields are made, burned, and cultivated in the national park every year. Since Medieval times, rye and turnip have been the two most popular plants that are cultivated by this method.
