Hands up, targets down

World cup circus brings international biathlon stars to Finland and North Karelia twice in 2020.

For sport fans, there is a lot to wait for in the coming years. One of the good news is that biathlon (a sport that interests more than 1.25 million Finns) world cup circus come to Finland twice in 2020. ‘In March Kontiolahti will host the next to last World Cup of the season. Then in November the season opener will start the next World Cup season’, says Tomi-Pekka Riihivuori from Kontiolahti Sport Club.

Go, Kaisa, Go!

Riihivuori, who himself competed in skiing, says that biathletes familiar from the media draw Finnish fans to the stadium.
’Last time that Kontiolahti hosted the World Cup, 96 percent of the spectators were satisfied with the atmosphere. For many the most important thing was to see Finnish and foreign top athletes familiar from TV live with their own eyes.’

Riihivuori, as many other Finns, remembers vividly how Kaisa Märäkäinen, the most popular athlete in Finland, won a medal in Kontiolahti World Championships in 2015. The way Kaisa fought for the medal was voted as the most thrilling sport moment of the year in Finnish Sports Gala (Suomen Urheilugaala).
’The blue-and-white home crowd cheered Kaisa wildly at the Wall climb and at the stadium. I hope that in the coming events we can experience something similar,’ Riihivuori says.
