Lake Pielinen Cycling Tour – A Cycling Adventure Through the Heart of North Karelia!

Take an unforgettable cycling adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of North Karelia! The 250-kilometre Pielinen Circuit cycling route offers beautiful nature, stunning scenery and unique cultural experiences. This route is suitable for cyclists who want to take it easy and also for those who enjoy a bit more speed. If you want to get away from busy roads, this is the perfect cycling route for you.

The journey around Lake Pielinen mainly runs along quiet gravel roads. The most demanding climbs and descents are found near Koli National Park. There’s plenty to see for unhurried holidaymakers who want to spend a week on the route, while cyclists who like to move faster can complete it over a long weekend. A lake cruise crosses Lake Pielinen from Koli to Vuonislahti during the summer. Hopping on the cruise allows you to choose between cycling only the northern or southern section of the route.

North Karelia is a place where you can experience the eastern culture in its many forms. The attractions include a summer theatre that has been voted the most beautiful in the region, numerous tsasounas (Orthodox chapels), idyllic rural landscapes with their characteristic carpet washing piers, and interesting museums.

Highlights along the route:

  • Koli – An enchanting national park and Finland’s most beloved landscape
  • Puu-Nurmes & Puu-Juuka – Lovely historical wooden house neighbourhoods
  • Eva Ryynänen’s artist residence – Outstanding wood sculptures and a unique ateljee atmosphere
  • Bomba House – An example of traditional Karelian building culture
  • Mätäsvaara Mining Village – buildings designed by Alvar Aalto in a mysterious, deserted environment

In North Karelia, food is a vibrant and rich part of the culture. Try freshly baked Karelian pies topped with egg butter, enjoy fresh fish from Lake Pielinen and fall in love with desserts made from berries.

There are plenty of accommodation options along the route. You can stay at modest campsites or pamper yourself at spa hotels set in magnificent scenery.

The route is easily to access, and bicycle rental companies and services for international tourists are available in the area (e-fatbikes).

Experience North Karelia on a bicycle next summer!
